‘YES group’ holds seminar on Women’s day at JU

Shahadat Sumon, JU correspondent: Youth Engagement and Support (YES) group of Jahangirnagar University (JU) on Tuesday in association with Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) organized a seminar marking the International Women’s Day-2020,

The seminar titled ‘Sustainable development goals, good governance, equality and women’ was held at the university`s seminar room of Zahir Raihan auditorium at noon.

Executive director of TIB Dr. Iftekharuzzaman addressed the seminar as chief guest while Professor Dr. Naseem Akhter Hosain of Government and Politics department addressed at the program as keynote speaker.

Prof. Naseem Akhter Hossain said, “Physical condition cannot be the cause of discrimination between men and women. Nobody should be justified in the consideration of physical anatomy. Don’t be aggressive to women. We can build a beautiful society by ensuring equality of women.”

Addressing the function Dr. Iftekharuzzaman said, “We are much forwarded than other countries on the basis woman’s right. But women are still facing discrimination in our society. In a country where the prime minister’s intervention is required for ensuring justice of Nusrat rape case, where the police provide security to the criminals, justice is less likely here. Now top posts of the country is led by women here. So if we want and maintain rules and regulations of the state properly, we can gain sustainable women empowerment in our country.”

Presided over by the chief adviser of JU YES group Prof Bashir Ahmed, Professor Golam Rabbani of History department, associate professor Md. Sajedur Rahman and associate professor Dr. Md. Tarikul Islam among others spoke at the seminar.

Deputy Program Manager of TIB and coordinator of JU YES group, Dilruba Begum Monalisa, Program Manager of TIB Afia Afreen, members of Daffodil University YES group, Stamford University YES group, Dhaka YES group, Savar SONAK YES group, current and former members of JU YES group and over 200 students of the university participated at the seminar.

Meanwhile, Sharmin Akter Supta, student of JU and player of Bangladesh Women’s National Cricket team also was honored as the symbol of women empowerment.

A blood tests program was also arranged in association with BADHAN (a voluntary blood donation organization of Jahangirnagar University) of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman hall unit.

Earlier, three ‘Natural Open Library’, financed by Transparency International Bangladesh were set up at three different places of the university campus. TIB executive director Dr. Iftekharuzzaman inaugurated the library at Teachers Students center.
