VC backed panel titled the JUTA election

Shahadat Sumon, JU correspondent: The election to the executive council of Jahangirnagar University Teachers Association (JUTA) held today.

VC backed teachers’ panel ‘Bangabandhu Sikkhak Parisad’ titled the JUTA election with 9 posts out of 15 posts while the anti-VC ‘Sammilito Sikkhak Samaj’ panel, an alliance of pro-Awami League, pro-BNP and left-leaning teachers  gets 6 executive post.

The election held at the university’s teachers’ club at 9 am and continued till 1.30pm without break where a total of 560 teachers out of 598 exercised their franchise at the polls.

Chief Election Commissioner Prof. AKM Abul Kalam of Urban and Regional Planning department, announced the polls results in the evening where Prof. A A Mamun of Physics department and Prof. Md. Amzad Hossen of Economics department elected as President and General Secretary respectively for the next one year.

The others executives of ‘Bangabandhu Sikkhak Parisad’ panel are Prof Sayed Hafizur Rahman of Environmental Science department (vice president), Motahar Hossen of Institute of Business Administration (treasurer) and 6 executive members Prof Ismot Ara of Zoology department, Associate Prof Mahfuja Khatun of Finance and Banking department,  Assistant Prof Md. Fakhrul Islam of Pharmacy department, Prof Bashir Ahmed of Government and Politics department, Prof Ahmed Reza of English department and Associate Prof Hussain Md. Sayem of Geological Science department.

Meanwhile, Associate Prof Burhan Uddin of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology department and 4 executive members Prof Monuar Hossen of Zoology department, Associate Prof Umme Saika of Geography and Environment department, Prof Mahbub Kabir of Chemistry department. Associate Prof Hosne Ara of History department has elected from the anti VC teachers panel.

During the election of teachers ‘association, the Students Union of JU unit organized a mass signing program in front of the teachers’ club demanding a six-point demand to reduce the crisis of education in the university.

The demands of the students are to finalized of JUCSU’s constitution and update the voter list, take effective initiatives to stop ragging and cancel the `Ganoroom’ system, formulate a High Court-directed Anti-Ragging Squad, ensure adequate allocation of funds in research for students and teachers, Institutional email to all students – Ensure access to online academic resources, complete medical and central library building by resolving the crisis.
