JU celebrates its 49th founding anniversary

Shahadat Sumon, JU correspondent: The authorities of Jahangirnagar University (JU) celebrated its 49th founding anniversary today amid festive mood, enthusiasm and daylong activities.

On Sunday (January 12), Vice-Chancellor Prof Farzana Islam inaugurated the ‘University Day’ program at the Business Studies Faculty in the morning by hoisting national flag and university flag.

Addressing the program Prof Islam said, “Our university has been achieved a lot both in education and research sector. The students of this university have increased the reputation of the university by taking up the quality research and higher positions.”

Meanwhile, she urged the teachers and students of the university to engage in the welfare of the nation.

Pro- vice chancellor (Administration) Prof Amir Hussain, Pro-vice chancellor (Education) Prof Nurul Alam and Treasurer Prof Sheikh Monzurul Huq were present at the inaugural session among others while acting registrar Rahima Kaneez conducted the program.

Later, a colorful procession was brought out from the Business Studies faculty premises led by Prof Farzana Islam where former and current students, teachers, employees and officials participated with colorful banners, balloons, and festoons.

After parading the main streets and register building of the university the procession ended at the Selim Al Deen Mukta Mancha.

The daylong program included a puppet show conducted by Dr. Harun-or-Rashid Khan, cultural function organized by Student Welfare and Counseling Centre of the university, staging drama and other cultural functions by Teacher-Student Centre and ‘Rangan Maim Academy’ at the Selim Al Deen Muktamancha.

Mentionable, on January 4, 1970, the university began its journey with 150 students admitted in the first four departments – Economics, Geography, Mathematics and Statistics.

On January 12, 1971, the former Governor of East Pakistan and Chancellor of the University, Rear Admiral SM Ahsan inaugurated the university with the name as ‘Jahangirnagar Muslim University’. The authorities of Jahangirnagar University started celebrating January 12 as ‘University Day’ since 2000.
