JU BCL and progressive student’s alliance protests over DU student rape

Shahadat Sumon, JU Correspondent: The leaders and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) Jahangirnagar University (JU) unit brought out a procession on the campus yesterday protesting rape of a female student of Dhaka University and demanding justice for the victim.

On Tuesday (January 7), the leaders and activists of BCL brought out the procession from the transport area of the university Led by its branch president Jewel Rana.

The procession terminated at the Central Shaheed Minar after parading different streets on the campus where they formed a human chain. Over 300 BCL leaders and activists of the university took part in the procession.

During the human chain, Jewel Rana said, “Even after 48 years of Bangladesh’s independence, women of our country are not safe. We can’t ensure safe environment for them yet. Rapists cannot be human beings. They should be thrown into the bottom of society. We demand exemplary punishment of the rapist. So that no one will have the courage to do such a thing in the future.”

Later, a section of students under the banner of `Jahangirnagar against Oppression’ staged a protest march at the afternoon protesting the rape of a DU student at capital and ten-years old child at the Aambagan area adjacent to JU campus.

The protest march from the central Shaheed Minar ended with a brief rally in front of the `Amar Ekushe’ sculpture after parading the important roads and building of the campus.

During the rally conducted by Sudipta Dey, general secretary of the JU branch of Socialist Student Front (Marxist), they demand three point demand to bring out the rapist under proper justice who involved in those rape, to stop all political rape and oppression on the plains and hill region, to reconstruct the sexual harassment cell at Jahangirnagar University, including abolishing the culture of rape.

At the rally, Susmita Mariam, president of the JU branch Socialist Student Front said, “Rape, oppression is raising in our country day by day. One woman was raped every 6 hour at the previous year. Due to the prevailing culture in the country, rapists are constantly crossing over.”

“Our society teaches us that a girl’s dress, whether she walks at night and that her eyesight is the root cause of her rape. Why female not be raped in such a culture? “She added.

Shakiluzzaman, convenor of the JU Branch of the Sadharan Chhatra Adhikar Sangrakkhan Parishad , said, “We have got freedom in exchange for the blood of 4 lakhs martyrs and the honor of 2 lakhs mothers and sisters. After 48 years of independence, female are not able to move safely in our country. The govt. has completely failed to provide security to women. ”

Shahidul Haque Pappu, general secretary of Jahangirnagar Cultural Alliance, said,

“When a topic is discussed very much across the country, Chhatra League came into movement then only. But the former JU BCL secretary himself recorded hundred of rapes. ”

” We shouldn’t seek Justice for rape only from the govt. We should boycott the rapists socially. Besides everyone should practice the manners from our society. Only then will we be relieved of this disorder.”he added.

Earlier, a second-year student of Dhaka University was allegedly raped and tortured in the capital’s Kurmitola area on Sunday night. The incident happened while she was walking from Kurmitola bus stop to a friend’s house in a nearby area around 7:30pm.

Later her fellow students and several DU employees brought her to Dhaka Medical College Hospital around midnight and got her admitted there at One Stop Crisis Center (OCC).
