DHAKA, – Information Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud today said the purchasing capacity of countrymen has increased over two and a half times in the last 11 years.

“The living standard of the country’s people is better now than previous time. And their purchasing capacity has also increased,” he told reporters
after attending a programme on Independent University of Bangladesh campus in the capital.

Criticising a comment of BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on increasing prices of commodities, Hasan said the country people
would not respond to their call.

“Prices of all essential commodities have increased across the globe. Simultaneously, the purchasing capacity of the countrymen has increased as
the economy of the country has got a boost under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina,” he added. “BNP is trying to catch fish in the troubled water. They always are busy in creating confusion among the people over different issues,” he said.

Academia organised the award giving ceremony at the auditorium of IUB where 193 students of ‘O’ and ‘A’ level received crests and certificates.

Replying to a query, the minister said that the proposed Mass Media Employees (services and conditions) Act and Broadcast Act will be enacted
soon.

“The two bills are now under scrutiny of the law ministry . . . I will talk with law minister as the bills will be passed as soon as possible,” he
added. At the function, the minister said the new generation will keep a significant role in building a worthy nation in future.

Terming the present government as education-friendly, he said the Awami League government has given top priority to the education sector.

“The education life is most precious time for every student. So, we should utilise every moment of our life,” he added. IUB Acting Vice Chancellor Professor Milan Pagon and Edexel Bangladesh Country Manager Saidur Rahman addressed the function as special guests.

Academia School Chairperson Sarwat Jeb, Managing Director Md Kutubuddin and Principal Professor Dr M Mahabubul Haque, among others, addressed the event.
