Under Graduate Math Olympiad held at JU

Shahadat Sumon, JU correspondent: The first regional round of the Eleventh National Undergraduate Mathematics Olympiad 2019 for Bachelor level students was held at Jahangirnagar University (JU) today.

Bangladesh Mathematical Society in partnership with AF Mujibur Rahman Foundation organised the competition.

A total of 18 different universities students, including Mathematics and physics departments of JU has participated in the Olympiad.

Ten contestants have been selected for the finale from among 111 participants from different public and private universities in Dhaka north region.

The winners are Md Mojammel Haque,Shimul Debnath, Mst. Noshin Sermily, Jamiul Islam Moon, Rahil Afzal Nihal, Ishtiaque Ahmed Safef from Jahangirnagar Uniiversity, Md Osman Ali, Md Rabiul Awal from Dhaka University of Engineering and Technology (DUET), Jobaida Gulshan Ara from United International University and Ishmum Monju from Islamic University of Technology.

Earlier, Dr. Ajit Kumar Majumdar, Dean of the Faculty of Mathematical and Physical sciences inaugurated the program at the Mathematics Department on Friday morning.

Chairman of the mathematics department Prof. Dr. Abeda Sultana gave the inaugural speech.

She said, “We are grateful to our university administration as they have given us permission to organize this Olympiad though the campus closed sin die from November 5. It can be organized because of the untiring efforts of the organizing committee.”

Dean of the Faculty of Mathematical and Physical Sciences Dr. Ajit Kumar Majumdar said, “Without mathematics, we won’t able to carry on our educational maturity and to develop our skills. Mathematics needs to be understood correctly.”

He also expressed frustration at the eagerness of learning Mathematics to the honours students and teaching-learning method in our country.

Professor Anwar Hossain, co-convenor of the National Graduate Math Olympiad-19 Committee, blamed the memorisation-based education system as one of the biggest problems at the present time. We should forsake this tendency.”

The Olympiad ended with the prize giving ceremony at afternoon.

Member Secretary of the Olympiad organizing commiitee Professor Abdur Rab, Professor Dr Layek Sazzad Andellah, Professor Jesmin Akter, Prof Ashraful Alam, Prof Dr. Aminur Rahman Khan, Prof Dr. Mohammad Osman Gani  were also present during the program.
