The opening ceremony of the 50th International Film Festival of Goa (IFFI 2019) was held at Goa’s Shyama Prasad Stadium. The film festival will conclude on November 28.
The 50th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) kicked off in Goa today. The film fest will be an eight-day-long affair and will conclude on November 28. The first IFFI was held way back in 1952, under then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru’s patronage.
The film festival’s opening ceremony, held at Shyama Prasad Stadium, was hosted by filmmaker Karan Johar. While French actress Isabelle Huppert was bestowed with the Lifetime Achievement award during the opening ceremony of IFFI 2019, Superstar Rajinikanth was honoured with the Icon of Golden Jubilee award for his contribution to arts and cinema.
200 movies from 76 countries are expected to be screened during the 50th International Film Festival of India. Dadasaheb Phalke Award winner Amitabh Bachchan’s movies will also be screened during the course of the film festival.
Amitabh Bachchan heaps praise on Rajinikanth
After receiving an award during the opening ceremony of IFFI 2019, Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan said, “Thank you for inviting me to the event and bestowing upon me such a big honour. It is the blessing of my father and mother. I am standing in front of you today because of all the directors, writers, producers and music directors. But I am most grateful to my fans. In all phases of my life, you have supported me. I am indebted to you for all the love. I won’t be able to repay the debt. I don’t want to repay the debt as I would like to keep this love with me always. I thank the Indian government, Goa government and my friend and talented actor Rajinikanth. Rajinikanth is a part of my family.
There is lot of back and forth between us. Sometimes I advise Rajinikanth, and at times he advises me. It is a different matter that we don’t listen to each other’s advice. I feel relationships are made of this. Sometimes I tell him not to do something, but he goes ahead and does it. Sometimes he tells me to do something, but I go ahead and do it. Thank you so much Rajini for being with me and being an incredible source of inspiration. Such a humble human being. Came up from such humble beginnings. It is incredible that we have him here with us today, inspiring us every day and night. Thank you so much Rajiniji. Thank you once again, ladies and gentleman. I have no words to express my gratitude to IFFI for honouring me today and for also having a retrospective of my films which should be starting tomorrow. I am grateful that you have chosen me and my films for a retrospective. I hope to see some of you there.”
