Cops allegedly harass JU protesters

Shahadat Sumon, JU correspondent: Protesting teachers and students of the ongoing movement at Jahangirnagar University (JU) allegedly harassed by policeman.

The organizers of the ongoing movement alleged that the university administration is trying to overturn the movement by harassing them with cops.

Ariful Islam Anik, general secretary of JU branch Students Union said, “Due to sudden police raid, my family members have become terrified. There has proper way to investigate in our country, but this kind of harassment in the name of investigation is unacceptable.”

Office secretary of JU branch Students Union, Hasan Jamil said, “Last Friday police rated my house twice and they used local mosque mike to find out me. Even they has investigate my sister house and threatened my sick mother via cell phone.”

Shadharan Chhatra Adhikar Shangrakkhan Parishad convener Shakil Uzzaman aslo alleged about the cops’ interrogation to his family members on November 9 in Tangail.

A total of eleven organizers including Ariful Islam Anik, Hasan Jamil, and Shakil Uzzaman of the ongoing movement alleged such type of cops’ harassment at their permanent residence.  Former President of Jahangirnagar University Debate Organization Musfiq-Us-Shalehin, BSU JU unit Executive member Rakibul Hauque Rony, President of JU Socialist Students’ Front (Marxist), Mahathir Muhammad, General Secretary Sudipta Dey, Organizing secretary of Socialists Students’ Front Shovon Rahman, Spokesman of the movement platform ‘Jahangirnagar against Corruption’ Armanul Islam Khan, Secretary of Jahangirnagar Theatre Saimum Islam and Joint organizing secretary of Jahangirnagar Theater, Mujibur Rahman Shisir.

Bangladesh Students’ Union condemned the incidence of police harassment of the organizers of the movement through a press release signed by President Mehedi Hasan Nobel and General Secretary Anik Roy on Sunday.

While contacted acting proctor ASM Firoz-Ul-Hasan about the harassment by the police, he denied the allegation and said, ‘The government Intelligence Agency can conduct the operation. We are not informed about it.”

Earlier, the protesting teachers had brought out the same allegation at `Arunapalli` residential area in October.
