Hall vacant rejected, Anti-VC movement goes on

The agitating teachers and students of Jahangirnagar University (JU) has decided to carry on the ongoing movement until the removal of Vice-Chancellor Prof Farzana Islam.

They vowed to continue their movement until their demand was met even if it required blood sacrifice.

Leaders of the movement warned that they would go on a tougher movement if the university authorities did not pay heed to their demand.

The VC, however, claimed she could not resign as per student demand, but only by direction from the chancellor or the prime minister on the basis of graft allegation prove.

Earlier, On November 5, authorities have decided to shut down university for an indefinite period amid student protests demanding removal of VC Prof Farzana Islam cantering a clash between BCL and the protestors.

In a press statement, signed by JU acting registrar Rahima Kaniz, the university authorities also banned rallies and processions on the campus following a Syndicate meeting in the afternoon on November 5 — in order to stop agitations demanding the removal of Vice Chancellor Prof Farzana Islam over corruption allegations

However, agitated students held a solidarity rally at the university`s `Murad Cattar` area with a view to announce their next plan of the movement. They have taken up their position on campus holding banner and festoon again since morning November 6.

When some students started gathering in front of the registrar’s office, the authorities removed them. It has been alleged that some third classes officials have beaten up the protesting teachers and students.

Meanwhile, Prof Bashir Ahmed, president of the Provost Committee, has ordered the evacuation of all residential halls at 1pm on November 6. He said that after this period, the agitators, the general students and the BCL will not be able to remain. Police will conduct a search if it required.

Replying to a question as to whether the hall vacant will be implemented with the help of the police, Acting Proctor ASM Firoz-Ul-Hasan said, “We have not made any such decision yet. However, we have to do it if it needed. We’ll tell it. ”

Therefore, the protestors as well as BCL activist of JU branch were staying despite being instructed to leave the hall.

“We will take our movement step by step considering the situation,” said spokesman of the protest, Rayhan Rayne. Since the administration has ordered the evacuation of all residential halls and they have lost their authenticity, We are worried about our students safety.

A second year student, Iqbal Hossain said, “We will continue the movement until our logical demands will be met.”

Meanwhile, hundreds of armed policemen were seen in front of the VC’s residence. Talking to an armed policeman, it is reported that they are trying to prevent any untoward incident.
