DHAKA,  – Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen has urged his German counterpart Heiko Maas to put pressure on Myanmar for creating conducive environment to take back forcibly displaced Rohingyas to their homeland, Rakhine in a sustainable manner with safety, security and dignity.

Momen also sought Germany’s support in ensuring accountability for the atrocities committed against Rohingyas while holding the maiden bilateral meeting with the German foreign minister in Berlin on Friday, said a press releases received here today.

During the meeting, the foreign minister referred to the four points proposed by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the 74th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) last month.

Apart from the Rohingya issue, the whole gamut of bilateral relations between the Bangladesh and Germany were discussed in the meeting.

Momen called for Germen enterprises to invest in Bangladesh taking advantage of the country’s demographic dividend and lucrative investment promotion packages for Foreign Direct Investment (FDI).

German development cooperation for Bangladesh and existing strong business relations between the two countries were also discussed at the meeting. The German foreign minister deeply appreciated the humanitarian position of Bangladesh in providing shelter to Rohingyas.

Heiko Maas commended the economic and social development achieved by Bangladesh, and assured of support of Germany to Bangladesh in addressing challenges of climate change. Earlier, Momen had meeting with German Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development Dr. Gerd Mueller.

During the meeting, Momen appreciated the development assistance of Germany to Bangladesh in areas like rural development, primary education, private sector development, renewable energy and climate effect.

Terming Bangladesh’s Readymade Garment Factories safe, green, environment friendly Momen said Bangladesh has achieved tremendous development in labour safety and rights issues.

BGMEA President Dr Rubana Haque was also present in the meeting and she showed BGMEA’s keen interest to join the German government’s “Green Button” initiative to promote environment and socially conscious textile products.

Mueller highly appreciated the Bangladesh decision to join the Green Button scheme.

The Foreign Minister also had meeting with President of German BVMW and Vice-President of World SMEs Professor Mario Ohoven and Secretary-General German Government research institute Frederick-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) Dr. Roland Schmidt on the same day.

Momen is now in his two-week tour to four European nations – Germany, France, Italy and Greece – for giving a boost to the country’s economic diplomacy as well as mounting further international pressure on Myanmar in resolving the Rohingya crisis.

The foreign minister will leave Berlin for France tomorrow.
