CDA and Army sign MoU to start TK 5616 crore mega project

CHATTOGRAM : Chattogram Development Authority (CDA) yesterday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with engineering corps of Bangladesh Army to implement a mega project at a cost of Taka 5616 crore aiming to mitigate the city’s water logging problem
Lieutenant Colonel Sharier Ahmed, Deputy Director General of 34th Engineering Construction Brigade of Bangladesh Army and CDA Superintendent Engineer Hasan Bin Shams signed the MoU titled “re-excavation of cannels, expansion, renovation and development,” on behalf of their respective sides at city’s Radisson Blue.
CDA Chairman Abdus Salam, Mayor of Chittagong City Corporation AJM Nasir, high officials of Bangladesh army and high officials of different stake holders in Chattogram were present at the MoU signing ceremony.
Addressing the occasion, CDA Chairman Abdus Salam said the CDA formulated the mega project for resolving the prolonged water logging problems following directives of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina
He said a total of 16 canals, among 36 canals will be re-excavated in the first phase. The canals which have been chosen for re-excavation include – Chaktan Khal, Birza Khal, Rajakhali Khal, Mirza Khal, Hijra Khal, Mohesh Khal, Mariam Bibi Khal, Khondakia Khal, Kalabagicha Khal, and Baromasi Khal.
The ECNEC has approved an initial amount of Tk 500 crore to begin the project. Bangladesh Army will start the first phase of the project within this week.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the project on March 21 in a public rally held at Patiya, Chattogram.
The entire project includes – re-excavation of 36 canals within the city areas, construction of 12 sluice gates and pump houses on the estuary of six canals, construction of six culverts, procurement of necessary equipment, cleaning of 320 km long existing drains, construction of retaining wall of 178 kilometres, construction of 48 girder bridges, re-excavation of all existing drains in 302 kilometre areas and installation of 880 electric poles.
The CDA under the Housing and Public Works Ministry will implement the project, which is scheduled to be completed by June 2020.
Vice Chancellor of Premier University Dr Anupom Sen, organizing secretary of Bangladesh Awami League (AL) Barrister Mohibul Hasan Nowfel, deputy publication and publicity secretary of AL Aminul Islam Amin, President of Chittagong south district Awami League Nurul Alam Chowdhury, Chattogram Jilla Parisad Chairman M A Salam and General Secretary of Chattogram south district AL Mofizur Rahman, among others, addressed the function.
