DHAKA – Four people were killed and 25 others injured as a commuter train derailed in Tongi of Gazipur district today disrupting the rail communication of the capital with rest parts of the country for hours, reports BSS.
However, the train service has been resumed in the afternoon hours after the accident took place in Notun Bazar area of Tongi, according to local people.
Two deceased were identified as Shahadat Hossain, 35, and Amir Uddin, 38, while rest two person yet to be identified. Both of them are rickshaw puller and resident of Gafargaon upazila in Mymensingh district, In-Charge of Tongi Government Railway Police (GRP) Sub-Inspector Rafiqul Islam said.
Of the deceased, Shahadat Hossain, 35, was pronounced dead after he was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in critical condition, he said.
Station Officer of Tongi Fire Service Md Atikur Rahman said five bogies of a Dhaka-bound ‘Commuter Train’ from Jamalpur veered off the rail track in Notun Bazar area of Tongi, leaving three passengers, who were travelling on its roof, dead on the spot and 25 others injured.
The injured were sent to Shaheed Ahsan Ullah Master General Hospital (SAUMGH), Tongi.
Of the wounded people, five were shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) in critical condition, a resident physician of the SAUMGH Dr Md Parvez Hossain said.
Meanwhile, Railways Minister Mujibul Haque visited the accident site and assured of monetary assistance to the family members of the deceased and to bear costs of medical treatment of the injured
A three-member probe committee has been formed over the incident. The committee has been asked to submit a report in three-working days.
