Ecnec approves 15 projects involving Tk 17,987.23 cr

DHAKA : The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (Ecnec)on Tuesdayapproved 15 projects involving an estimated cost of Tk 17,987.23 crore, reports UNB.

The approval came from the 18th Ecnec meeting of the current fiscal year, held at the NEC conference room with Ecnec Chairperson and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.

Briefing reporters after the meeting, Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal said a total of 15 projects of eight ministries and divisions were placed at the Ecnec meeting. “The meeting approved all the 15 projects involving an overall cost of Tk 17,987.23 crore,” he said. Of the total estimated cost, Tk 11,940.32 crore will come from government fund, while Tk 523.69 crore from relevant organisations’ own funds and Tk 5,523.22 crore as project assistance, the minister said. Of the 15 projects, 13 are new and two are revised ones.

Among the projects, the largest one is Enhancement and Strengthening of Grid Network in Eastern Region Project involving Tk 5,803 crore.
The goal of the project is to ensure power supply and meet the growing electricity demand by enhancing and strengthening the grid network in the greater Comilla, Noakhali and Chittagong regions. The project will be implemented in 35 upazilas of nine districts under Chittagong Division by December 2021. The second largest project is Rehabilitation of Rural Road Infrastructures Damaged by Flood and Disaster Project involving Tk 2,785.18 crore. The project will be implemented in 338 upazilas across the country by June 2020.

The other big projects approved at the meeting are Restoration of Kalukhali-Bhatiapara (80.25-km) Railway Line and Construction of Kashiani-Gopalganj-Tungipara New Railway Project (2ndrevised) with Tk 2,110.27 crore and Conversion of Bangladesh Railway’s Parbatipur-Kaunia Meter-Gauge Railway Line to Dual-Gauge Project with Tk 1,683.21 crore, Establishment of Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Medical College and Hospital in Gazipur Project with Tk 924.06 crore, Land Acquisition, Development and Protection for Patuakhali 1320 Megawatt super Thermal Power Plant with Tk 819.51 crore, and Ensuring Environmental Sanitation including Water Supply and Human Waste Management in 32 Pourashavas (under 27 districts) with Tk 712.65 crore.

The other projects also include Farmers’ Training for Transferring Technology to Upazila-level (3rd phase) Project (Tk 314.29 crore), Nutrition Development through Production of Fruits round the year (1st revised) (Tk 299.23 crore), Small Irrigation Development and Irrigation Capacity Strengthening through Preserving Surface Water in Rangpur region (Tk 140.78 crore), Development of Road Infrastructures and Drainage System at Nasirabad, Dakshingao, Demra and Manda areas under Dhaka South City Corporation (Tk 476.29 crore).

The remaining projects are Bangladesh Insurance Sector Development Project (Tk 632 crore), Erection of Barbwire along the periphery of various BOPs (Border Out Posts) for Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) (Tk 158.39 crore), Upgrading District Highways to the proper standard and width (Barisal Zone) with Tk 667.35 crore, and Jamalpur-Chechua-Muktagachha Highway Widening and Strengthening, including Brahmaputra bridge approach, (Tk 460.08 crore).
