TBT Report: Barisal University (BU) and Bangladesh Soil Science Society in a joint effort observed “The World Soil Day-2017” yesterday with much enthusiasm.
The programmes of the day were arranged in two phases.
Around 9: 00 am in the morning, a colorful rally led by BU vice-chancellor and president of Bangladesh Soil Science Society Dr. Imamul Haque was brought out in participation of treasurer, registrar, students, teachers, deans on the campus.
University treasurer A K M Mahbub Hasan, president of Teachers’ Association, provost of Sher-E-Bangla Hall and chairman of Finance and Banking department Mohammad Ibrahim Molla, Mathematics department chairman Hena Biswas, Chief Scientific Officer of Bangladesh Rice Research Institute Dr. Mohammad Hossen were among notables took part at the rally.
In the second phase, a quiz contest, question-answering session, and a seminar were arranged at Kirtonkhola auditorium of the university.
While speaking as a chief guest of the seminar, upholding the significance of the day he spoke, “Ma” (mother) the word is derived from Mati (Soil), so to us soil is like our mother. As mother conceives us, the soil in the same fashion conceive carries our burden.
Using the soil mindlessly we do the worst harm of the soil and it has lost it fertility power. To this end we need a Land Management principle.
Warning the loss of soil he said, Everyday, we have been losing 1% of our soil on which the government has become aware. Government has take up number of programmes in this regard.
Stressing the necessity of soil education he told attendees of the seminar, “Soil Education is must for all”.
BU treasurer Professor Dr. AKM Mahbub Hasan, chief scientific officer of BRRI, Dr. Mohammad Hossen, Art and Humanity Faculty dean Mohamma Mohsin Uddin , Soil Resources Development Institute, Barisal Zone chief scientific officer Mohammad Sabbir Hossen and BM college soil science assistant professor Mohammad Mofizur Rahman spoke at the seminar among others.
