‘To save bidi industry’, Bidi Labourer Federation president Amin Uddin threatened hunger strike till death in front of National Press Club. He declared this recently in a demonstration organized by federation at Hosenabad Kindergarten School field, a press release said.
Amin Uddin said we demand that government decrease the tax on bidi and increase the wages of laborers. He added, If smoking is injurious to health then cigarette is a significant contributor there. But National Board of Revenue (NBR) did not impose the increased tax on cigarette, but they imposed the increased tax on bidi. It is a conspiracy to destroy the bidi industry. British American Tobacco (BATB) have joined with them in this conspiracy, but we won’t let them succeed. If needed we will fast till death in front of National Press Club.
The joint secretary of the federation Abdur Rahman Said, Government imposed the tax on Bidi industry but did not increase the wage of the laborers. We demand that government must withdraw increased tax on bidi and increase wages labourers. And government should not shutdown Bidi industry without creating alternative employment opportunities. Organizing secretary Harik Hossain, Member Shamim Islam also spoke on the occasion.
