DHAKA : An action plan titled “National Road Safety Strategic Action Plan” has got approval with an aim of cutting down the road accident to 50 percent by 2020.
The National Road Safety Council approved the action plan at its 25th meeting at a city hotel today with Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader in the chair, said an official release.
Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan, State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives Mashiur Rahman Ranga and Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Ministry of Road Transport and Bridge Md Akabbar Hossain were present at the meeting.
The meeting was informed that a meeting led by Road and Highways Division secretary will be held with concerned stakeholders in every two months to cut down the accident rate under the approved plan, the release said.
The meeting decided to implement the excel load control policy from December 1 to control the overloaded vehicles playing on the roads and highways.
To avert accident during the winter season, the meeting also decided to keep the vehicles’ speed limited in particular cases during the period.
Road and Highways Division Secretary Md Nazrul Islam, Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) Chairman Mashiur Rahman, Nirapad Sarak Chai Chairman Ilias Kanchan, Bangladesh Sarak Paribahan Malik Samity Secretary General Khandaker Enayetullah and Bangladesh Sarak Paribahan Sramik Federation General Secretary Osman Ali and other members of the council joined the meeting, among others.
