Rice price hike artificial, temporary crisis: Tofail

DHAKA : Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed on Sunday termed the rice price hike an “artificial and temporary crisis” and claimed there is an adequate rice stock in the country, reports UNB.
“There’s no shortage of rice supply in the market,” he said while addressing a post-budget seminar organised by Bangladesh Krishi Orthonithibid Samiti at Krishibid Institution Bangladesh in the city.
He, however, said the government has decided to import 2.5 lakh metric tonnes of rice to keep the rice market stable and a tender is being floated to import another consignment of 6 lakh metric tonnes of rice.
Tofail said the duty on rice import has been increased to protect farmers’ interests and ensure fair price for them, said a handout.
On the proposed budget for the fiscal year 2017-2018, he said no such budget will be passed which might invite sufferings for people. “Everyone will be happy after the budget gets through Parliament.”
