SANGSAD BHABAN, – More than 1.10 crore metric tons of potato will be produced in the country in the current fiscal, Agriculture Minister Begum Matia Chowdhury said, reports BSS.
Replying to a written question from treasury bench member M Abdul Latif (Chittagong-11), the agriculture minister said Bangladesh secured seventh position in the world in potato production.
She said according to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), 94.74 lakh MT of potato were produced in the country in the last fiscal (2015-16), while the production in the current fiscal (2016-17) would exceed 1.10 crore MT.
Matia Chowdhury said the government has taken various steps for accelerating this advancement.
The measures, she said, include ensuring use of balanced fertilizers in potato production by cutting of their price for four times and availability of fertilizers at farmers level, boosting production through environment-friendly programmes, giving necessary information and advices to the potato farmers through Farmers Information and Advices Centres (FIAC).
The agriculture minister said use of farm-produced fertilizers, vermicompost and other fertilizers in cultivating potato has been expanded, while the farmers are being provided advices on potato preservation for about 3/4 months in local technology.
Matia Chowdhury said the people are being encouraged in taking more potato alongside rice.
