Students of Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (RUET) confined twenty two teachers, including the Vice-Chancellor on February 04, 2017 (Saturday) demanding change in the credit system.
Around 150 students staged a demonstration in front of the administration building since the Saturday afternoon to press their demand. Meanwhile, the students threatened to continue their movements until the authorities cancel the credit system.
University Security Officer M. Jalaluddin confirmed about the matter. He also said the students kept the VC Rafiqul Alam Beg and other teachers confined till Sunday morning. According to the RUET sources, a student has to get minimum 33 credits out of 40 in the “33 credit system”. A student can gain credits through their exam marks, lab test in an average which varies from department to department. If a student fails to do so, he or she will not be allowed to go to next session and has to incur loss of another year.
Before the system launched, students could attend classes and examinations of the next session even if they got less than 33 credits. They could obtain the credits passing the certain examinations later.
