AL celebrates 67th founding anniversary

DHAKA : Awami League, the country’s oldest political party, observed its 67th founding anniversary on Thursday in a befitting manner, reports UNB.
Founded on June 23, 1949, at the historic Rose Garden in the old part of Dhaka, the party played the lead role in all the democratic movements apart from leading the nation in the War of Liberation in 1971 under the leadership of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
Awami League chalked out elaborate programmes to celebrate the day.
The day’s programmes started through hoisting of the national flag as well as party flag atop its central office and offices across the country at sunrise.
In the morning, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina paid rich tributes to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on the occasion.
Sheikh Hasina paid the homage by placing a floral wreath at the portrait of the Father of the Nation in front of Bangabandhu Memorial Museum at Dhanmondi in the city.
After laying the wreath, the Prime Minister stood there in solemn silence for some time as a mark of profound respect to the memory of Bangabandhu, the architect of independence.
Flanked by senior leaders of the party, Sheikh Hasina, also the president of Bangladesh Awami League, placed another wreath at the portrait of Bangabandhu on behalf of her party.
Later, Sheikh Hasina formally inaugurated the 67th founding anniversary programmes of Bangladesh Awami League by hoisting national flag as well as releasing pigeons and balloons while AL Presidium Member Begum Matia Chowdhury raised the party flag. The national anthem was sung on the occasion.
