Rich tributes paid to language martyrs in Rajshahi

RAJSHAHI: The Immortal Ekushey February and International Mother Language Day is being observed in Rajshahi city as elsewhere of the country on Sunday in a befitting manner paying rich tributes to the memories of the language movement martyrs, reports BSS.
Different socio-cultural, political organisations, educational institutions, professional groups and district administrations had taken up elaborate programmes in observance of the day.
The programmes include placing of floral wreaths at Shaheed Minar, hoisting of national flags at half-mast atop all public and private buildings, discussion and morning procession.
There were miniature national flags and colored flags inscribed with Bengali alphabets throughout the city streets.
Multifarious programmes like Quran Khwani and discussion at the Imam Training Academy, art and literary competitions for school and college students at Shishu Academy and Shilpakala Academy, serving improved diets to the inmates of hospitals, jails, safe homes and baby homes and screening of documentary films on the Language Movement were also organised in the city.
Various political parties and socio-cultural and volunteer organisations and educational institutions observed the day with a renewed pledge for building a happy, prosperous and non-communal Bangladesh.
District administration organized a discussion and cultural function at the auditorium of Shilpakala Academy on Sunday afternoon on the occasion of according reception to the Language Veterans in the city. Commissioner of Rajshahi division Helaluddin Ahmed addressed the programme as chief guest with Deputy Commissioner Kazi Ashraf Uddin in the chair.
The Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) has taken up elaborate programmes in observance of the day. Fazley Hossain Badsha, MP, accompanied by acting Mayor of RCC Nizam-Ul Azim opened the day’s programme by placing wreaths at Bhuban Mohan Park Shaheed Minar at zero hours. Leaders of Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangshad, Awami League (AL) and other political parties, professional organisations and common people placed wreaths there to pay homage to the Language Movement Martyrs.

Meanwhile, Rajshahi University, Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (RUET), Rajshahi Medical College and other educational institutions adopted various programmes to observe the day.
RU Vice-chancellor Prof Mijanuddin, Pro-VC Prof Chowdhury Sarwar Jahan, Treasurers Prof Sayen Uddin, Registrar Prof Entajul Haque accompanied by huge other teachers, officers and students placed floral wreaths at the altar of RU Central Shaheed Minar at Zero hours.
