9,740 tonnes wheat from USA for Gaibandha

GAIBANDHA : USA Ambassador in Bangladesh Barcia Bernicat today said WFP received a consignment of a total of 9,740 tonnes of soft wheat from the Agriculture Ministry of the USA in last March 2015 for Gaibandha school children, reports BSS.
“The white wheat would be utilized for manufacturing high energetic and nutrition and mineral enriched biscuits which would distributed to as many as 1.30 lakh primary students of four upazilas in the district under School Feeding Programme”, she said.
USA Ambassador Barcia Bernicat disclosed it while addressing a handover ceremony of wheat for the School Feeding Programme on the premises of Konchipara Government Primary School under Fulchhari upazila in the district in the morning around 11 am as the chief guest.
WFP organized the ceremony for receiving the wheat provided from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) to the people of Bangladesh.
Ag Minister-counselar of USA Scott Sindelar and country representative of WFP Christa Radar were present as the special guests.
The function was also addressed, among others, by acting deputy commission Abu Bakar Siddique, superintendent of police Ashraful Islam, district primary education officer AKM Amirul Islam, head of programme coordination of RDRS Bangladesh Monjusree Saha and head of WFP sub office, Rangpur Hafiza Khatun.
All the children of the schools of the upazilas of the district would get the biscuits under the programme for three years next till 2017 and the biscuits would be manufactured in Bangladesh, she said.
This grant is a part of long term support of USDA in running school feeding programme in Bangladesh; she said adding it would enhance the enrolment rate of the students in schools side by side with reducing drop out rate and alleviating poverty.
The USDA has been distributing tiffin to 3.50 lakh students of Bangladesh for a decade last being a partner of the WFP, she added.
Later, the Ambassador attended Meet the Press and answered to the questions raised by the media men about the ongoing school feeding programme in the district.
Earlier, the ambassador visited the class rooms and distributed biscuits to the students and held a meeting with the members of the school managing committee.
The WFP and GoB assisted school feeding programme is being implemented by the directorate of Primary and Mass Education in partnership with RDRS Bangladesh in Sundarganj, Gobindaganj, Shaghata from 2006 and Fulchhari upazila from 2015.
