400 shanties burnt in Katasur slum fire

At least 400 shanties were gutted as a slum caught fire at Battala in Katasur area of Mohammadpur in the city on Sunday morning.

Fire service control room sources said the fire erupted at Pulpar Basti (slum) in the area at about 8:28 am.

Being informed, 10 firefighting units rushed in and managed to bring the blaze under control at about 9:40 am.

The fire fighters are still busy with rescue work in the area.

Azizul Haque, officer-in-charge of Mohammadpur Police Station, told UNB, “We are yet to confirm whether any casualty happened.”

A three and a half-year-old girl named Fathema still remains missing, said the OC, adding her garment worker mother had gone to her workplace leaving the child asleep in their room.

The reason behind the fire could not be ascertained as yet.
