Media’s role vital in preventing child marriage, ensuring nutrition: speakers

RANGPUR : Speakers at a views-sharing meeting have said the role of media is vital in preventing child marriage and ensuring nutrition of pregnant women, mothers and babies to reduce maternal and neonatal deaths, reports BSS.
They stressed the need for launching a social movement involving officials, journalists, civil society members, marriage registrars, public representatives, socio-cultural activists, religious and community leaders to achieve the goals.
They were addressing the meeting organised by Biral Area Development Programme (ADP) of World Vision Bangladesh (WVB) with the local journalists at its ADP Office in Birganj upazila town of Dinajpur on Tuesday afternoon.
Rangpur Divisional Communications and Public Relations Specialist of WVB Golam Ehsanul Habib attended the meeting as the chief guest with Biral ADP Manager of the NGO Sujit Costa in the chair.
Former President of Biral Press Club MA Kuddus Sarker and its incumbent President Mozammel Haque Sanu attended the views-sharing meeting, participated by local journalists and WVB officials, as the special guests. Sujit Costa said WVB has been working in 39 villages under five unions of the upazila involving 54,474 people to improve their life standard, ensure quality education for children, health and nutrition services through sponsorship project management programmes.
Besides, the NGO has been providing assistances directly to unprivileged 3,000 children for ensuring their normal growth, quality primary education, nutrition, medicare and health services and other assistance, he said.
He provided information on available sources of nutrition, importance of optimum nutrition, dangers during pregnancy, reasons behind maternal and neonatal deaths, harms of child marriage, importance of first milk for newborn babies and other issues.
The participating journalists appreciated the WVB activities on prevention of child marriage and ensuring maternal nutrition during pregnancy, safe delivery and motherhood, health and medicare services for mothers, babies, children and adolescents.
The speakers put emphasis on proper selection and consumption of nutritious foodstuffs like vegetables to prevent deficiency of protein, vitamin-A, iodine, iron and minerals of all people including pregnant women, mothers, babies and children.
They said many babies, children, mothers, pregnant women and adolescents are suffering from malnutrition due to lack of awareness, knowledge on available nutritious foods around them and inappropriate food habits that cause subsequent complications.
The chief guest urged the media workers in stopping child marriage, ensuring balanced diets for pregnant women, babies, children and adolescents, breastfeeding for six months for reducing the neonatal, maternal and children death rates.
