Mobile phone, PSTN subscribers now over 11.04 crore

DHAKA: Mobile phone and PSTN subscribers in Bangladesh recorded a significant increase over the last five years as the total number of subscribers reached over 11.04 crore, reports BSS.
Talking to BSS, post and telecommunication minister Advocate Sahara Khatun said a total of 425 upazilas, including 25 remote hilly upazilas, are now under Teletalk network and steps have already been taken to expand this network to 448 upazilas.
Highlighting the remarkable achievement in post and telecommunications sector, Sahara Khatun said if the current trend of digitalization continues, the government would be able to launch country’s first satellite-‘Bangabandhu Satellite-I’ in the space by 2016.
She said the number of mobile phone subscribers is now 10.91 crore and 13.23 lakh people are using Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN). Under the ‘Info-Bahan project, work on installation of transmission equipments and 4500-km optical fibre cable network have already been completed to expand internet information network to seven divisional headquarters, 56 districts and some upazilas, she added. The minister said work on setting up of 850-km long optical fibre cable covering 108 unions of 93 upazilas has already been completed. Besides, work is on progress for setting up 1100-km optical fibre cable that will cover 1,006 unions of 98 upazilas under 68 districts, she added.
