Italy ship capsize…….. Dhaka not yet sure about any BD victim

DHAKA : Bangladesh Mission in Rome is trying to know whether any Bangladeshi national has been affected following a ship capsize off the southern Italian island of Lampedusa while carrying African migrants to Europe, reports UNB.
“Our mission in Rome informed that they’re yet to obtain information whether any Bangladeshi national was victim or affected due to boat capsize in Italy,” M Shameem Ahsan, Director General of External Publicity of the Foreign Ministry, here on Thursday night.
He said the Bangladesh Mission in Rome remains engaged with the concerned authorities regarding the matter.
The ship carrying African migrants to Europe caught fire and on Thursday sank there, killing at least 114 people as hundreds were dumped into the sea, AP reports quoting officials said.
Over 150 people were rescued but about the same number were still unaccounted for.
It was one of the deadliest recent accidents in the perilous Mediterranean Sea crossing that thousands of African migrants make every year, seeking a new life in the European Union.
Smugglers charge thousands of dollars a head to slip people into Europe aboard overcrowded, barely seaworthy fishing boats, providing no life vests or other safety features.
The 66-foot boat was believed to have been carrying 450 to 500 people, according to the International Organization for Migration. The boat left from Tripoli with migrants from Eritrea, Ghana and Somalia.
