Seminar on Rana Plaza Incident and Present Situation of Garments Industry of Bangladesh

A seminar on “Rana Plaza Incident and Present Situation of Garments Industry of Bangladesh”, organized by Presidency University, was held on Wednesday (July 3) at the university’s Gulshan Campus, says a press release.
Dr. Mashiur Rahman, Economic Adviser to Prime Minister, addressed the seminar as chief guest.
Professor Dr. Muhammad Mahboob Ali, Vice-Chancellor, Presidency University and Macro Financial Economist, chaired the session.
Dr. Khondaker Golam Moazzem, Additional Director, Research, CPD, presented key-note paper on the subject.
Christian Von Mitzlaff, BSCI Representative to Bangladesh, Anwar-Ul-Alam Chowdhury (Parvez), Managing Director, Evince Garments Ltd., Dr. Md. Nazmul Islam, Head, Deptt. of Civil Engineering, Presidency University, Shibli Ahmed Khan, Head, Deptt. of English, Presidency University, Annesha Zaheen, Lecturer, Deptt. of Business, Presidency University, Kalpona Akter, Executive Director, Bangladesh Center for Workers’ Solidarity, Zia Ahad, Director, Global Human Rights and Nazma Akter, President, United Garments’ Federation were in panel of discussion as special guests.
Dr. Mashiur Rahman told the seminar that the government is trying its best to improve the working environment of the labors up to the international level. He said steps have been taken to prevent any sort of unethical practice in the garments sector and foreign buyers have been assured that they will be satisfied as the government is trying to improve working condition as well as safety and security of the labors with the help of ILO, BGMEA and foreign buyers.
Vice-Chancellor of Presidency University Dr. Muhammad Mahboob Ali said that as industrialization is going on and entrepreneurs as well as labors are passing through second generation, there may be some problems. But we hope that garments industry as a whole will grow up gradually. He appealed to frame a taskforce so that they can talk to USA for getting back GSP facility.
